“Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God” (Romans 13:1-2).
“For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in” (Matthew 25:35).
Millions of immigrants, including tens of thousands unaccompanied children, have illegally crossed our border into the United States. Some are fleeing violence in their home country. Some want a better life and economic opportunity in the United States.
So what is our country to do? Send them back to their own country? Grant them citizenship or work permits? Build a border fence? And what should a Christian think and do about illegal immigration? The Bible says we are to obey the law (Romans 13), but also that we should take care of the stranger (Matthew 25)
Even amongst professing Christians, there are many opinions on illegal immigration. Some think it’s wrong to even call them “illegal” or “aliens” because our immigration laws and past conquests of border land are illegal. Others see this issue in terms of government’s duty to protect its citizens and provide a stable society. Still others see illegal immigration as an opportunity to show the love of Christ through caring for those in need.
Kerby Anderson, president of Probe Ministries and radio host for Point of View, will join us this weekend on The Christian Worldview to discuss illegal immigration. Kerby lives in Texas, a border state on the front lines of this issue.
